A city that has its roots in prehistory, through the Illyrian tribes in the Balkans, the Great Roman Empire, the Medieval Bosnian State, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Modern History of World War I and II, the period within the former Yugoslavia and war 1992-1995, a city that has been under siege for the longest time along with its inhabitants in modern History.
Due to its long and rich History and religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the Jerusalem of Europe or the Jerusalem of the Balkans. It is one of the few European cities in the center. In the immediate vicinity, it is the places of worship of all four great monotheistic religions: the Mosque, the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and the Synagogue.
